HOWTO: Vista: Getting Jade Empire to work on Vista
You should be able to install Bioware's Jade Empire game on Vista without problem as long as you let the installer install the required version of DirectX 9. Apparently this will not affect Vista's DirectX 10 setup (although ymmv - I have yet to read anything authoritative about this).
After installation you need to do two things.
- Right click on the shortcut to Jade Empire, select Properties, select the Compatibility tab, and tick Run this program as an administrator. Then click OK.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to the Jade Empire folder (C:\Program Files\Jade Empire\ by default). Right click on the save folder, select the Security tab, click on the Users line in the Group or user names: box, then tick the Allow box next to Full control. Click OK. This relaxes Vista's strict security rules and lets Jade Empire write save files to this folder.
After doing this Jade Empire should run fine. However, different people have had different experiences according to the forums on Bioware, this is just what worked for me.
